Uganda Coffee Exports Soar After China Lifts Tariffs

Date:

Uganda coffee exports are poised for strong growth after China removed tariffs on goods from African nations. The zero-tariff policy, effective December 1, 2024, opens new opportunities for Ugandan farmers and processors.

Nelson Tugume, CEO of Inspire Africa Group in Ntungamo, called China’s move a timely boost for Uganda’s coffee industry. He said zero tariffs create a better business environment than markets that still impose high import duties.

China’s policy now covers all 53 African countries with diplomatic relations. Uganda can benefit from rising Chinese coffee demand and disruptions in other producing countries. Tugume emphasized that this move could stabilize exports and increase household incomes across the nation.

To meet China’s quality standards, Inspire Africa is training its staff in advanced processing methods. Over 40 employees recently studied in China, and another 40 are scheduled to follow. Tugume said mastering these techniques is vital to maintaining consistent quality and sustainable Uganda coffee exports.

Data from Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture shows coffee exports to China surged 190 percent in March 2025. The ministry also reported $3 million in deals at the China International Import Expo. Uganda signed an agreement with Chinese coffeehouse brand Cotti Coffee, which has over 7,500 outlets worldwide.

This partnership directly links Ugandan farmers and processors to the Chinese market. Coffee remains a crucial commodity, supporting roughly 1.8 million households and driving rural economic growth.

Analysts predict that China’s zero-tariff policy will strengthen Uganda’s global market position. Combined with skill development and trade agreements, it sets the stage for long-term export expansion.

Tugume concluded that the policy provides both opportunity and responsibility. Uganda must prepare to meet demand while sustaining high-quality coffee exports.
