Superstition Crackdown Intensifies in North Korea

Date:

North Korea has escalated its superstition crackdown as the Ministry of State Security increases surveillance on ruling party officials and their families. The effort reflects growing tension ahead of end-of-year personnel reshuffles and signals rising fear inside the political system.

In mid-November, the Ministry of State Security instructed regional bureaus to track fortune-telling visits, ritual practices, and nighttime travel. Officials said the superstition crackdown aims to stop behavior viewed as disloyal, politically risky, or ideologically corrupt.

Many officials fear demotion or reassignment during annual reviews tied to major party milestones. As a result, their spouses reportedly turned to shamans, fortune tellers, and ritual advisers. Some families paid hundreds or even thousands of dollars for charms or gold-based talismans believed to protect their positions.

Authorities warned that such activity violates expectations for ideological discipline. They also directed security bureaus to report bribe deliveries made to senior officials during late-night visits.

Security officers described the superstition crackdown as necessary to reduce corruption and strengthen loyalty. They said the campaign will support national planning as the government prepares for the next Party Congress.

However, many government workers expressed frustration. Some argue the leadership should focus on food prices, wages, and fuel shortages instead of internal behavior. Others worry the campaign may trigger loyalty investigations or political punishment.

Analysts expect tighter surveillance through December as the government finalizes new assignments. Increased checkpoint monitoring, informant activity, and formal warnings may follow.

For now, the superstition crackdown shows North Korea’s attempt to manage fear, control behavior, and shape elite loyalty during a politically sensitive transition.
