Four New Taipei Police Officers Face Investigation Over Criminal Gang Ties

Date:

Four New Taipei City police officers, including a senior official, face a police corruption probe for leaking case information to a criminal gang. Prosecutors searched the officers’ residences yesterday and brought all four in for questioning last night.

After interrogation, prosecutors released three officers on bail. They are holding the senior official incommunicado because of the suspected offenses’ seriousness. Authorities said the investigation targets violations of the Anti-Corruption Act and the Criminal Code.

The four officers include acting deputy commander Cheng of the Criminal Investigation Division, investigator Chao, former investigator Wang now at Jinshan Precinct, and investigator Chang from Zhonghe Precinct. Prosecutors alleged that the officers attended a 2023 banquet hosted by organized crime members and disclosed sensitive investigation details.

Prosecutors detained Cheng incommunicado due to a risk of collusion or evidence destruction. Chang posted bail of NT$150,000, Wang NT$100,000, and Chao NT$50,000. The Investigation Bureau’s Taichung City Field Office will continue probing the suspected misconduct.

The Zhonghe Precinct said Chang had transferred to its investigations team, handling official documents. Authorities suspended him on October 16 after linking him to prior information leaks. The division pledged full cooperation with the investigation and promised no cover-ups.

Experts said the police corruption probe highlights the risks when officers interact with criminal groups. Analysts warned leaking case details can undermine public trust and compromise law enforcement operations.

Officials stated that this police corruption probe could result in disciplinary actions, stricter internal oversight, and personnel changes. Authorities promised to release further updates as the investigation continues.

The investigation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in law enforcement, especially for officers with access to sensitive information.
