Mongolia reinforced its commitment to global partnership during a meeting between Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav and UN Resident Coordinator Jaap van Hierden on December 10. Moreover, both sides focused on accelerating Sustainable Development Goals and preparing for the 2026 desertification conference. Officials stressed that this global partnership supports national priorities in governance, environment, and economic stability.
The prime minister said Mongolia will continue deepening cooperation with the UN system. Furthermore, he explained that the government aims to use the global partnership framework to advance long-term reforms. He also noted that hosting COP17 will highlight Mongolia’s leadership on land protection and regional environmental risks.
Zandanshatar outlined new anti-corruption efforts designed to strengthen political integrity. Additionally, he said the government introduced a draft resolution that increases transparency in campaign financing. The plan seeks stricter oversight of donations to candidates, political parties, and election operations. He added that accountability remains essential for public trust and international alignment.
The prime minister confirmed that Mongolia plans to expand cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Likewise, he stated that the government is working to establish a regional UNODC office in the country. The move aims to support cross-border enforcement and address rising security issues.
Van Hierden said the UN stands ready to support Mongolia’s economic and social challenges. In addition, he stressed that the UN will prioritize efforts to reduce inequality and improve job creation. He also highlighted support for Mongolia’s energy transition and digital development, which remain key national goals.
Both sides agreed that COP17 preparations will require stronger coordination next year. Consequently, they emphasized that the conference will bring global attention to desertification and Mongolia’s increasing climate pressures. They also discussed opportunities for long-term environmental programs that could expand after the event.
The meeting reaffirmed that Mongolia views cooperation with the UN as a central policy pillar. Ultimately, officials believe the global partnership will help sustain momentum and strengthen future development efforts.
