Taiwan’s ITRI and Saft Advance Next-Generation LMFP Batteries

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has announced a new partnership with French battery manufacturer Saft to develop next-generation LMFP batteries. This collaboration marks a major step forward for Taiwan in entering the global battery materials market. By joining forces, both organizations aim to accelerate innovation and commercialization of these advanced batteries.

Next-generation LMFP batteries, or lithium manganese iron phosphate batteries, are an enhanced version of traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries. They maintain the same benefits of low cost, long life, and high safety. However, they improve voltage and energy density by approximately 15 to 20 percent. This boost allows electric vehicles and devices to run longer and deliver better performance.

ITRI’s General Director of Material and Chemical Research Laboratories, Chiu Kuo-chan, emphasized that the collaboration is a key milestone for Taiwan’s battery technology sector. He explained that both parties will use their strengths to develop and commercialize next-generation LMFP batteries quickly and effectively. This partnership also helps position Taiwan more competitively in the international battery industry.

On the other hand, Saft’s Chief Technology Officer, Kamen Nechev, praised Taiwan’s rapid progress in battery materials technology. He noted that this joint effort will help Saft expand its next-generation battery capabilities worldwide. Nechev also pointed out that the project aligns with both companies’ sustainability goals and efforts to achieve net-zero emissions.

Founded in 1918 and now part of TotalEnergies, Saft has long supplied industrial batteries to sectors like transportation, defense, and renewable energy. By collaborating with ITRI, Saft gains access to Taiwan’s cutting-edge research, while ITRI benefits from Saft’s extensive global experience.

This partnership not only upgrades Taiwan’s battery industry chain but also advances green technology worldwide. Next-generation LMFP batteries promise to revolutionize energy storage by combining safety, cost efficiency, and enhanced energy density.
