Romeo et Juliette Musical Returns to Taiwan with Original Leads

Date:

The Romeo et Juliette musical is coming back to Taiwan this January. This return marks a special final tour with the original lead actors who starred in the 2001 premiere. Fans of the show can catch performances in three major cities over nearly a month. First, the musical will play at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts from January 15 to 18. Then, it will move to the National Taichung Theater from January 22 to 25.

Finally, the show will conclude at the Taipei Music Center, running from January 30 through February 8. These venues will showcase the celebrated production as part of its global 25th anniversary tour.

Based on William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, the Romeo et Juliette musical stands out because it tells the story entirely in French. Created by Gerard Presgurvic, it debuted in Paris after two years of development. Since then, the production has become one of the most popular French-language musicals worldwide. Damien Sargue and Cecilia Cara originated the roles of Romeo and Juliet in 2001.

They have reprised their characters many times and are excited to perform together one last time in Taiwan. Sargue expressed a mix of nostalgia and enthusiasm about reconnecting with Taiwanese audiences. Similarly, Cara described the original Paris premiere as a highlight of her career.

The musical portrays the brief yet unforgettable love story between Romeo and Juliet. Their romance faces many challenges due to the longstanding feud between their families, the Montagues and Capulets. The story explores themes of love, conflict, and fate. Costume design plays a key role in representing the rivalry. The Montague family wears blue costumes with ethnic touches and silver accessories. Denim adds a casual, romantic flair, symbolizing loyalty and confidence.

On the other hand, the Capulet family dresses in red with gold and black details. Their military-style uniforms show pride, wealth, and strict discipline. As the Romeo et Juliette musical embarks on this final tour, audiences can look forward to a powerful, emotional experience. The combination of timeless storytelling, iconic music, and striking visuals makes this a performance not to miss.
