Bolikhamxay Water Project Secures South Korea Funding for Infrastructure Expansion

Date:

The Bolikhamxay water project will receive USD 6 million from the South Korean government. This initiative will improve access to safe and reliable water in Lak Sao, Kham Keut district. It aims to serve more households and strengthen the province’s water infrastructure. Moreover, it will boost community health and living standards.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the Korea International Cooperation Agency signed the agreement in Vientiane. The five-year plan will involve both central and provincial agencies. Additionally, Bolikhamxay authorities will oversee local implementation. This cooperation ensures smooth progress and shared responsibility.

The Bolikhamxay water project includes building new facilities and upgrading existing ones. Distribution networks will expand to reach underserved areas. Furthermore, environmental and social assessments will guide the development process. Clearance of unexploded ordnance will also ensure safety during construction.

Training programs will prepare water supply operators and technical staff. Central and local officials will receive guidance to manage systems effectively. In addition, the project will encourage community participation through water and sanitation education. These efforts will promote responsible use and long-term maintenance.

Monitoring of local water sources will protect long-term quality. Authorities will gather and analyze data on water and groundwater safety. This information will help maintain system stability. Consequently, residents will gain confidence in their water supply.

The upgraded system will more than double current safe water access. At present, around 12,734 people benefit from reliable water. By completion, over 24,000 residents will have access. Therefore, the project will significantly improve living conditions. This change will also support better economic activity in the region.

Reducing the need for long water collection trips will especially benefit women and children. The initiative follows the “3S” principles of safety, stability, and sustainability. These align with the Water Supply Sector Development Strategy 2030, aiming for 90 percent safe water coverage in provincial municipalities. Stronger infrastructure will create lasting benefits for future generations.
