Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) has taken a major step in advanced chip production by filing plans to build a new 1.4nm fabrication facility in Taichung. The proposed fab, dubbed “A14,” will play a key role in pushing the limits of semiconductor technology. Mass production at the site is scheduled to begin within the next few years. The application, submitted to the Central Taiwan Science Park Bureau under the National Science and Technology Council, outlines an initial investment of NT$1.5 trillion (around US$49 billion). This marks one of TSMC’s most ambitious domestic projects to date.
Construction of the facility is expected to start soon. TSMC plans to finalize the site and initiate building activities shortly. This aligns with its broader strategy to stay at the forefront of advanced chip production. Meanwhile, research and development for the 1.4nm process will be based in Hsinchu. Recruitment efforts have already started to support the development phase. The Hsinchu base will play a crucial role in shaping the upcoming technology.
According to TSMC’s official disclosures, the 1.4nm process will offer a 15% performance boost compared to the 2nm node. It will also cut power consumption by 30% and improve logic density by over 20%. These advances reflect TSMC’s drive for continual innovation and increased efficiency. Chairman and CEO C.C. Wei reaffirmed TSMC’s commitment to Taiwan as its innovation hub. Speaking at a recent investor conference, Wei highlighted ongoing projects in Hsinchu and Kaohsiung for 2nm fabs. He emphasized that Taiwan remains central to both development and production.
Despite expanding globally, TSMC remains anchored in Taiwan. The company continues to pour resources into advanced chip production and packaging. These efforts support both domestic economic growth and global supply chain stability. This latest move in Taichung signals TSMC’s long-term strategy to maintain leadership in the semiconductor industry. It also reinforces Taiwan’s position as a key player in the global tech economy.
