Amazon Web Services (AWS) kicked off its two-day cloud services summit in Taipei on Tuesday. Wang Ding-kai, the Managing Director for Hong Kong and Taiwan, highlighted the essential role cloud technology plays in today’s digital landscape. According to Wang, many AI applications cannot function without cloud support. He explained that when networks go offline, numerous generative AI tools become unusable.
Additionally, edge computing’s potential remains limited without cloud infrastructure backing it. On the summit’s first day, speakers discussed a variety of topics. These included generative AI, machine learning, data analytics, cloud infrastructure, migration strategies, cybersecurity, and how industries across the Asia-Pacific region apply these technologies. Wang pointed out that companies worldwide are racing to develop generative AI solutions. These tools generate creative content, such as images, music, and videos, based on user input.
However, Wang advised firms to establish sound business models before investing heavily in expensive hardware. He warned that such equipment carries significant financial risks due to amortization. The AWS leader also emphasized the company’s long-standing partnership with Nvidia, a leader in AI chips. For 14 years, AWS has collaborated with Nvidia, utilizing servers like the GB200 to enhance AI infrastructure.
This partnership enables faster AI model inference and improves the efficiency of AI-driven applications. Moreover, Wang shared insights about Amazon’s use of automation in its global warehouses. The company manages about one million robots worldwide, streamlining operations. By incorporating generative AI, Amazon aims to fully automate its services. This approach also focuses on lowering energy consumption and reducing carbon emissions.
In addition, Wang revealed details about Amazon’s ambitious satellite project. The plan involves launching 3,232 low-Earth orbit satellites over the next six years. After deployment, satellites must reach their designated orbits, deploy solar panels, and establish communication with ground stations. The goal is to create a global wireless broadband network that offers reliable internet access worldwide.
