From 2013 to 2016, shoppers collected Atre Club points and redeemed them through a special website. Many cards included a QR code for easy access.
In 2016, JR East folded the Atre Club program into its larger JRE Point system. Shoppers could still use their old cards, but the QR codes became useless. Later, the company stopped managing the atre-club.jp domain. Scammers took control of that domain. Now, if someone scans an old Atre QR code, it may lead to a malicious website. This scam site can attempt to steal personal and financial information.
The Atre Club QR code scam came to light last week. In response, JR East released a public safety notice. The company warned users to avoid scanning cards issued between October 2013 and February 2016.
On July 1, JR East confirmed that the scam website no longer loads. Still, they advised users to keep avoiding the QR code, as the domain remains unsafe. This case shows why companies must manage their digital tools carefully. A simple QR code from years ago can suddenly become a security threat.
