Bagh Schools Initiative Expands

Bagh Schools Initiative in Mongolia has opened its first two schools at remote border areas, improving education access. The launch reflects a strong commitment to supporting children in rural communities.

The Ministry of Education and UNICEF Mongolia, with backing from Khan Bank, inaugurated the new schools on November 18, 2025. The locations include the Uyench border unit in Khovd aimag and the Borshoo border port in Uvs aimag. Each school is designed to serve 75 children.

These schools aim to provide children in remote communities with safe, local education, reducing the need for long-term separation from families. Across Mongolia, only 44 out of 1,575 baghs currently have primary schools. Consequently, over 36,000 children must leave home annually to attend distant schools, often staying in dormitories or with relatives.

The lack of local schools creates emotional strain for children and families. Many young students face loneliness, anxiety, and weakened family ties, while households manage additional social and economic burdens.

The Bagh Schools Initiative addresses these challenges by bringing education closer to home. Evariste Kouassi-Komlan, UNICEF Mongolia Representative, said the project ensures children in rural areas can access quality education safely. He added that continued government leadership and private sector engagement will be essential for expansion.

Munkhtuya Rentsenbat, CEO of Khan Bank and UNICEF Mongolia National Ambassador, said the initiative reflects the bank’s commitment to growing alongside communities. She emphasized that Bagh Schools Initiative represents a forward-looking investment in Mongolia’s children.

The new schools feature advanced insulation, heating, ventilation, solar power, and modern water and sanitation systems. They also provide high-speed internet, digital learning spaces, and fully equipped kitchens. Teachers received training in child-centered, multi-grade, and blended teaching methods to ensure inclusive education.

Three additional bagh schools in Tuv and Selenge aimags are set to open soon. By 2027, the Ministry of Education, UNICEF, and private partners plan to build around 60 more schools, further extending educational opportunities for remote children.

Experts note that Bagh Schools Initiative could strengthen community cohesion, reduce family separation, and improve long-term learning outcomes. The program also highlights the value of public-private partnerships in addressing rural education gaps.

Ultimately, Bagh Schools Initiative represents a transformative effort to expand access to quality education, nurture young learners, and support sustainable development in Mongolia’s rural regions.
