Since April, the authorities have documented nine separate incidents of Taiwan blue magpie attacks. The birds become particularly defensive during their breeding season, which lasts from April through August. This period marks the most aggressive behavior, as the blue magpies fiercely protect their chicks. The Taiwan blue magpie is a unique bird species native to the region. It typically lives in forests at medium and low altitudes but can also be found in suburban areas.
Notably, Yangmingshan near a local university has a known population of blue magpies. Students and faculty members there have experienced frequent attacks by these protective birds. Because the birds travel in groups, their attacks can feel intimidating. They actively guard their nests for about five to six weeks, during which they chase away any perceived threats. After this time, the chicks leave the nest to find new habitats, and the birds become less aggressive.

People should not remove nests or disturb these birds, as doing so carries severe penalties. Besides the blue magpie, New Taipei is home to a variety of rare birds such as peregrine falcons, painted snipes, and fairy pittas. Officials urge residents to respect this rich ecosystem while staying safe.
