Beyond Reality: Taiwan Architects Showcase Innovative Designs

Date:

Taipei’s architecture scene is taking visitors on a journey through transformation at the “Beyond Reality” exhibition. Running until Sept. 28, the event takes place at the Taipei National University of the Arts.

Curator Wang Chun-hsiung explains that Taiwan has experienced dramatic social and spatial changes over the past 25 years. Consequently, architects must address not only physical structures but also the realities of politics, economy, and culture. He adds that the exhibition highlights projects completed since 2000, emphasizing both public and private architecture.

The exhibition presents a variety of perspectives. Architect Lee Wen-sheng blends urban density with natural openness. His work contrasts the serenity of monasteries against the vibrant flow of neighborhoods, highlighting everyday dualities. Similarly, Hsiao Li-ren explores generational memory and collective consciousness. He connects historical family homes with contemporary housing while forecasting future spatial trends.

Meanwhile, Chueh Ho-ping’s “Between Reality and Void” examines the merging of real and virtual worlds. By focusing on six aspects of urban life—food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment—he demonstrates how architecture can bridge private and public experiences. Chueh emphasizes that virtual spaces provide new opportunities for social interaction and engagement.

In addition, Day Jia-hui and Lin Hsin-ping present “A Trilogy of Public Life.” Their work translates public policy into tangible design and practical living spaces. The exhibition shows how urban planning and architecture intersect to shape communal experiences.

“Beyond Reality” also offers educational activities. Visitors can join lectures every Saturday and take architect-led tours on Sundays. These events provide deeper insights into the exhibited works and foster discussions about Taiwan’s evolving urban landscapes.

Overall, “Beyond Reality” captures the dynamic relationship between architecture, society, and technology. It encourages visitors to consider how design can reflect both past transformations and future possibilities. The exhibition reinforces the message that architecture extends beyond simple structures—it engages with life itself.

Visitors interested in contemporary Taiwanese architecture should not miss “Beyond Reality,” open on the third floor of Taipei National University of the Arts until Sept. 28.
