Birthday Turns Deadly: Father’s Songdo Shooting Stuns Family

Date:

A shocking family revenge shooting in Songdo has stunned the nation as investigators uncover disturbing details suggesting premeditation. A 62-year-old man identified as A allegedly killed his son B, 33, the day before B’s family planned to leave for the United States. Authorities believe deep-seated resentment and a possible revenge motive may have fueled the crime.

On the night of the tragedy, B hosted a birthday dinner for his father at his Songdo apartment. During the gathering, A fatally shot B using a homemade firearm. B’s wife and two young children, preparing to travel with him, witnessed the horrifying scene. The timing of the act has raised concerns that A targeted his son in connection with unresolved family conflicts.

A’s ex-wife C, a well-known CEO of a skincare company, was reportedly in the United States on a business trip. While police have not confirmed if B’s family intended to meet her, investigators suspect that A’s lingering anger toward C may have contributed to the family revenge shooting.

Police reported that the shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. and B succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Officers searching A’s home in Seoul discovered improvised explosive devices, including PET bottles filled with flammable liquid and rigged with a timer set to ignite the next day. This discovery has strengthened suspicions of a calculated plan to harm beyond the immediate act.

Experts in criminal psychology say the evidence points toward meticulous planning. Professor Lee Yoon Ho of Dongguk University noted that A stockpiled materials for multiple homemade guns and purchased live ammunition long before the incident. These details indicate premeditation and a desire for extended damage.

Professor Oh Yoon Sung of Soonchunhyang University echoed similar concerns during a radio interview. He suggested A acted out of feelings of helplessness, jealousy, and anger. By killing his son during a family celebration, A may have chosen the most dramatic way to express his revenge.

Investigators deployed a criminal profiler to analyze A’s mindset further. They are also considering convening a Personal Information Disclosure Deliberation Committee to decide whether A’s identity should be made public. However, officials say such disclosure is unlikely due to the familial nature of the case.

Authorities charged A with murder, violating firearms and explosives laws, and attempted arson. He refused to attend his detention warrant hearing at Incheon District Court. The family revenge shooting has sparked nationwide debate on domestic violence and the dangers of unaddressed emotional conflicts.
