Taiwan will witness a rare and stunning blood moon eclipse this Sunday night. This total lunar eclipse promises a spectacular show in the night sky. The moon will appear in a deep red shade, captivating skywatchers across the island.
The Tainan Astronomical Education Area (TAEA) announced that the blood moon eclipse will start at 11:28 p.m. Sunday and last until 4:55 a.m. Monday. The most dramatic phase, when the moon glows red, will happen between 1:31 a.m. and 2:53 a.m.
Although lunar eclipses happen several times each year, Taiwan rarely gets to see a full view. This makes the upcoming blood moon eclipse a special occasion for astronomy fans and the general public. To celebrate, TAEA will offer free public lectures, star-gazing tours, and telescope viewings. For those who cannot attend in person, the event will be livestreamed on TAEA’s YouTube channel.
Tainan City Education Bureau Director-General Cheng Hsin-hui explained how the blood moon eclipse occurs. When the sun, Earth, and moon align, Earth’s shadow completely covers the moon. The moon does not disappear, however. Earth’s atmosphere bends sunlight, filtering out blue light. This lets red light reach the lunar surface, giving the moon its characteristic coppery glow.
Besides sparking interest in astronomy, the event also connects with cultural stories. TAEA is hosting an exhibit called “Legend of the Lunar Eclipse.” The exhibit explores scientific facts and folklore related to the blood moon eclipse.
Looking ahead, skywatchers can also prepare for other exciting events. On September 21 and 23, Saturn and Neptune will come closer to Earth. This makes them easier to see with the naked eye or binoculars.
