Best Tourism Villages in China Recognized by UN Tourism

Date:

China celebrated four villages recently recognized as Best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. The awards were presented during a ceremony in Huzhou city, Zhejiang province. The recognition highlights the country’s commitment to preserving rural culture, landscapes, and local traditions.

The honored villages include Huanggang in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture, Guizhou province; Jikayi in Garze Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Sichuan province; Dongluo in Taizhou city, Jiangsu province; and Digang in Huzhou city, Zhejiang province. These communities showcase diverse local heritage, culinary practices, and sustainable tourism initiatives.

The Best Tourism Villages initiative was launched in 2021 to identify and honor rural destinations worldwide that successfully preserve their cultural and natural assets. So far, 236 villages from 57 countries have earned the designation. With the addition of the four Chinese villages, China now has 19 sites included in the global list.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised the achievements, saying, “The 19 Best Tourism Villages that China has show the readiness and diversity of Chinese villages as destinations. All of them have unique cultures and traditions.” His remarks emphasized the country’s growing role in promoting sustainable rural tourism internationally.

Officials highlighted that the recognition encourages local communities to continue investing in cultural preservation and eco-friendly practices. Furthermore, it enhances the global visibility of these destinations, attracting more international travelers seeking authentic experiences.

Tourism experts also note that designating villages as Best Tourism Villages can create economic benefits while fostering pride among residents. The initiative serves as a model for other countries aiming to balance tourism development with heritage conservation.

The award ceremony in Huzhou included cultural performances and exhibitions showcasing the daily lives and traditions of the awarded villages. Organizers noted that the recognition aligns with broader national efforts to support rural revitalization and sustainable economic growth.

Looking forward, authorities plan to promote these villages through international marketing campaigns and exchange programs with other Best Tourism Villages globally. The designation also encourages continuous improvement in infrastructure, visitor services, and environmental management to maintain high-quality tourism standards.

The Best Tourism Villages designation not only celebrates local heritage but also strengthens China’s position in sustainable tourism development on the global stage.
