Rising Competition Drives Record Civil Service Exam Turnout

Date:

China saw rising competition during the 2026 national civil service exam held on Sunday. It marked the first test since authorities expanded the age limit for applicants. The written exam took place in 250 cities and drew over 2.83 million candidates, showing strong interest in stable government roles.

More than 3.7 million applicants qualified to take the exam, and the participation rate reached about 87 percent. However, only 38,100 positions are available this year. That figure dropped by 1,600 compared with 2025. As a result, the average hiring ratio climbed to 98:1, further signaling rising competition in the talent pool.

Interest in civil service careers has continued increasing. Applicant numbers grew from 2.6 million in 2023 to more than 3 million in 2024. Participation reached 3.4 million in 2025 and climbed again this year. Hiring ratios also rose during the same period, moving from 70:1 to 98:1.

Some positions drew extraordinary attention. One police officer role in Ruili City attracted more than 6,400 applicants. It became one of the most highly sought-after positions in the country.

Experts say several factors are fueling this trend. Economic uncertainty plays a role, and many younger workers seek long-term job security. The expanded age limits also encourage more mid-career professionals to apply. The new rules allow applicants up to age 38. Advanced degree graduates applying in 2026 now qualify until age 43.

Professor Zhu Lijia from the Chinese Academy of Governance said experienced workers can strengthen public administration. He added that the policy shift offers more career flexibility for people who continued studying after entering the workforce.

Officials expect demand to remain strong as job competition grows nationwide. The rising competition highlights evolving workforce priorities, greater interest in public administration, and increased value placed on secure employment.
