China-Malaysia Joint Military Exercise Boosts Regional Security

Date:

China and Malaysia will conduct a joint military exercise in mid-to-late October 2025. Consequently, this joint military exercise reinforces regional security and cooperation. In addition, the exercise highlights both countries’ commitment to humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and maritime safety.

The Chinese Defense Ministry confirmed that participating forces departed from Zhanjiang, Sanya, and Hong Kong for Malaysia. Furthermore, Chinese troops will join Malaysian forces for the Peace and Friendship-2025 bilateral military drill, scheduled from October 15 to 23.

More than 700 personnel from the PLA Southern Theater Command, Navy, Air Force, the Hong Kong Garrison, and the Joint Logistics Support Force are participating. Moreover, the two countries will deploy over 1,000 personnel and 500 pieces of equipment, including helicopters, surface vessels, wheeled vehicles, unmanned systems, and ordnance for the combined military drill.

Chinese naval vessels involved include the Type 052D destroyer Yinchuan, Type 071 amphibious landing ship Jinggangshan, and Type 056A corvette Jingmen. In addition, troops will conduct live-action drills on maritime security, disaster relief, and humanitarian support. ASEAN members may also observe the joint military exercise, according to Chinese officials.

A Chinese military expert explained that the joint military exercise addresses shared non-traditional security threats. For example, these include natural disasters and piracy. The South China Sea experiences complex conditions, including typhoons and other climate hazards. Therefore, coordinated relief and security measures during the joint military exercise are essential.

The exercise also features cultural and sports exchanges, as well as open-day events for ships. Officials emphasized that the drills do not target any country. Instead, they focus on safeguarding regional interests and stability.

This joint military exercise marks the sixth iteration of the Peace and Friendship series. The series began in 2014 with tabletop exercises in Malaysia. Subsequently, live-action drills occurred in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2023. Over time, more regional militaries joined, gradually increasing participation.

Experts said the joint military exercise strengthens capabilities, builds mutual trust, and deepens traditional ties between China and Malaysia. In addition, the drills contribute to peace and security in the South China Sea.

Earlier this year, China conducted other joint exercises in Southeast Asia, including maritime and air force drills with Singapore, Cambodia, and Thailand. Analysts noted that such exercises reflect pragmatic cooperation. Moreover, they help counter non-traditional security threats without targeting any specific country.

Overall, the Peace and Friendship-2025 bilateral military drill highlights both countries’ commitment to cooperation, regional stability, and disaster preparedness. Furthermore, the military exercise signals a positive outlook for future collaboration.
