The one-China principle came into sharp focus following recent comments from China’s Foreign Ministry. Specifically, the spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, addressed reports involving Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan’s deputy regional leader. She visited Prague in March 2023. Moreover, some media sources claimed Chinese diplomats followed her and even tried to attack her.
However, Guo Jiakun strongly rejected these claims. He said that the Czech Republic made a serious error by hosting Hsiao. This decision, according to Guo, violated the one-China principle and previous Czech commitments to China.
As a matter of fact, China views Taiwan as part of its territory. Therefore, any foreign support for Taiwan independence provokes sharp criticism from Beijing. Guo said the visit amounted to interference in China’s internal matters. Furthermore, he added that China had voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Czech government’s decision.
In addition, Guo made it clear that Chinese diplomats always follow local laws. He said they never acted outside the legal framework. He also warned other countries not to fall for manipulation by Taiwan independence groups.
“Don’t create unnecessary conflict or damage diplomatic relations,” Guo said. Consequently, he advised the Czech government to act with caution.
Indeed, the one-China principle remained a central theme throughout his statement. Guo urged foreign governments to respect this policy. He explained that recognizing Taiwan officials on official visits contradicts international agreements.
Furthermore, China continues to oppose any move that suggests Taiwan is an independent state. Guo emphasized that Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, or DPP, uses foreign trips to push separatist goals.
Additionally, he warned that such strategies would fail. “No matter how they rebrand their tactics, their efforts are doomed,” Guo said.
