China Rejects Tariffs: Beijing Responds to France’s Trade Threats

Date:

China rejects tariffs and calls for dialogue after a French official pushed for stronger EU barriers on Chinese imports. As a result, tensions rose after French Finance Minister Eric Lombard said Europe must act to protect its industries from Chinese competition.

Specifically, Lombard argued that China’s industrial model aims to dominate global markets. He warned this could damage Europe’s economy unless tougher tariffs are introduced. His comments were reported by Bloomberg on July 5.

In response, Chinese expert Cui Hongjian criticized the remarks. He said such actions go against World Trade Organization rules. Furthermore, Cui emphasized that China rejects tariffs that violate fair and open trade principles.

Nevertheless, despite criticism from French politicians, China plans to maintain stable relations with both France and the EU. Cui explained that China values strategic communication over trade conflict. He also noted that consistent dialogue remains essential.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Paris on July 4. During the meeting, Macron supported multilateralism and said France opposes bloc rivalries. Additionally, he expressed hope for stronger cooperation with China on global issues.

In return, Wang said China seeks deeper ties with France. He called for a fair environment for Chinese companies operating in Europe. He also said China remains open to practical cooperation that benefits both sides.

Moreover, Cui highlighted a recent trade resolution between China and the EU as a model. China had launched an anti-dumping probe into European brandy imports. But it exempted major producers who agreed to price commitments.

According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, brandy meeting agreed prices would not face tariffs. Cui said this showed China’s use of fair, evidence-based trade tools under WTO rules.

He further explained that China applies anti-dumping rules only after detailed investigations. These steps aim to protect local industries while keeping markets open.

In closing, Cui said China rejects tariffs that harm global trade. Instead, it will promote fairness, dialogue, and shared growth. As tensions rise, China urges Europe to avoid protectionism and work together.
