China officially launched a new digital economy cooperation platform with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Tuesday in Tianjin. The digital economy cooperation initiative aims to strengthen ties across cities, enterprises, universities, and think tanks of SCO member states. Officials emphasized that this platform will serve as a hub for multi-dimensional collaboration in the digital economy.
During the launch ceremony, authorities highlighted the importance of matching supply and demand while considering the industrial strengths, resource endowments, and cooperation needs of participating countries. They explained that tailored approaches would help attract wider participation in the development of the platform. Moreover, planners indicated that both flagship and smaller “livelihood-focused” projects would be implemented to support sustainable growth.
The platform also aims to boost infrastructure collaboration. Officials called for advancing “hard connectivity” in digital networks, ensuring that physical and technical systems support cross-border digital operations. They further emphasized “soft connectivity” by harmonizing rules, standards, and regulatory practices among member nations. In addition, the initiative focuses on “heart connectivity,” aiming to cultivate digital talent through training programs and exchanges across SCO countries.
At the previous “SCO Plus” meeting in Tianjin on Monday, Chinese authorities announced plans to establish three major cooperation platforms covering energy, green industry, and the digital economy. These platforms integrate expertise and resources to facilitate innovation and sustainable development. By combining technology, talent, and infrastructure, the digital economy cooperation framework will serve as a model for regional collaboration.
Experts noted that the initiative could accelerate digital trade, enhance cybersecurity standards, and create opportunities for joint research projects. Furthermore, member countries can explore pilot programs that address local needs while contributing to broader regional development.
In conclusion, the digital economy cooperation platform demonstrates China’s commitment to deepening partnerships with SCO countries. By fostering connectivity, talent exchange, and collaborative projects, the platform aims to advance shared growth and long-term innovation in the region.
