China-Spain ties continue to strengthen as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to a deeper strategic partnership. During a recent meeting in Madrid, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez pledged closer cooperation. Notably, their latest dialogue followed Sanchez’s April visit to China, which included meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Indeed, those talks laid a foundation for greater economic and diplomatic collaboration. Overall, China-Spain ties remain a key pillar in their shared global vision.
Subsequently, Han emphasized the need to build on the progress made during Sanchez’s earlier visit. Furthermore, he noted both leaders had aligned on preserving global trade and promoting fairness. In addition, Han acknowledged the 20th anniversary of the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership. He called this milestone an opportunity to boost high-level dialogue and expand political trust. In turn, China aims to coordinate more closely with Spain across multilateral platforms.
Meanwhile, Han urged stronger cooperation between China and Europe during this period of global uncertainty. He stated that joint efforts could counter rising volatility in international relations. Importantly, China-Spain ties, he said, offer a model for constructive global partnerships. Moreover, he also pushed for shared support of the United Nations and World Trade Organization. Han urged Spain to help guide EU policy toward a more balanced relationship with China.
In response, Sanchez applauded China’s consistent backing of multilateralism. He also criticized growing global protectionism, saying it harms all economies. Additionally, Sanchez added that Spain and the EU stand firmly against trade unilateralism. He stressed the need to preserve international rules that underpin free trade. Finally, he reaffirmed his desire to strengthen China-Spain ties through mutual investment and diplomacy.
Spain will continue supporting the one-China policy, Sanchez confirmed. Moreover, he welcomed more Chinese firms to invest in Spanish industries. Sanchez also said Spain would support EU-China dialogue based on respect and shared benefits. He believes China-Spain ties could drive more stable EU-China relations. This effort, he concluded, aligns with Europe’s long-term interests in open cooperation.
