China Strengthens Religious Guidance to Align Faiths with National Goals

Date:

Chinese leader Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of religious guidance during a Political Bureau study session of the Communist Party of China. Xi called for religious guidance to help faiths adapt to the Chinese context, supporting social harmony, ethnic unity, and national stability.

During the session in Beijing on September 29, Xi outlined the need for active guidance of religious groups and leaders. He stressed that religions must align with socialist society while retaining their Chinese cultural roots. Xi highlighted that religious guidance is essential to promote understanding of history, culture, and national development among believers.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, the Party has implemented policies aimed at strengthening the Chinese orientation of religions. Xi noted that these measures have achieved significant results in religious work in the new era. He called for continuous efforts to ensure that faith practices integrate with traditional Chinese culture.

Xi stressed that handling religious affairs according to the law is vital. Clear legal direction helps resolve conflicts and maintain order within religious communities. He called for updates to regulations and policies to improve oversight and strengthen guidance of faith practices nationwide.

Experts note that religious guidance plays a central role in maintaining social cohesion in a diverse society. Xi’s emphasis reinforces the Party’s strategy to balance freedom of belief with national priorities. Religious figures and communities are expected to work alongside government institutions to promote cultural integration.

Xi also stressed the need for education and dialogue among believers. He noted that guiding religious practices should help people grasp their country, history, and cultural heritage. This approach allows faith communities to support social stability and promote national development.

Looking forward, Xi called for continued implementation of policies supporting religious guidance. The Party plans to strengthen institutional mechanisms and foster cooperation between religious organizations and local authorities. The aim is to sustain harmony, promote cultural integration, and ensure that religions contribute constructively to Chinese society.

Overall, Xi’s remarks underline the centrality of religious guidance in China’s governance. The approach combines legal oversight, cultural integration, and active engagement with faith communities to promote long-term stability.
