China’s AI Literature Expands Global Reach

Date:

AI literature is increasingly transforming Chinese online storytelling, as writers and industry leaders highlight its growing global potential. At the 2025 China International Online Literature Week in Hangzhou, participants explored how AI literature accelerates creation, translation, and distribution of Chinese works. Consequently, the discussions underscored both opportunities and challenges in expanding this industry worldwide.

Currently, Chinese online literature reaches approximately 200 million readers abroad across more than 200 countries. Moreover, AI-assisted storytelling plays a major role in this expansion by offering translation tools that lower costs and accelerate publishing timelines. In fact, AI-powered translations now make up over 70 percent of all translated works in this sector.

Furthermore, experts noted that AI literature and AI-assisted writing can help with drafting, editing, and visual design. For example, writers often use AI for translations, plot reviews, or character illustrations. As a result, some authors generate images of their characters to enrich their descriptions, while companies employ AI literature tools to produce audiobooks and webcomics more efficiently.

However, writers emphasized that AI literature serves as a supportive tool rather than a replacement. Both Chinese and international authors explained that algorithms can accelerate tasks but cannot capture human emotion or personal experience. Therefore, literature still relies on authentic voices and cultural insight to resonate with global audiences.

In addition, several publishing platforms have embraced AI-powered storytelling to boost productivity. One major company reported cost savings exceeding 90 percent through AI translation systems. Meanwhile, another platform released thousands of AI-translated titles in the first half of 2025, further expanding its international catalog.

Nevertheless, participants stressed that human oversight remains essential. Reports indicate that AI literature often struggles to localize cultural nuances or maintain consistency in names and plotlines. Consequently, editors and translators continue refining AI-assisted writing to ensure accuracy and preserve cultural depth.

Moreover, officials from the China Writers Association highlighted that AI literature forms part of a larger creative ecosystem. They described a “new trio” of online literature, gaming, and web series, where stories feed into multiple industries. As a result, this synergy strengthens cultural exports and elevates China’s role in global content markets.

Similarly, international participants praised Chinese online literature for its unique narratives and emotional resonance. Writers from the Middle East, Europe, and Turkey noted that AI literature helps these stories reach new audiences while remaining accessible on smaller platforms worldwide.

Looking ahead, industry leaders expect AI literature to continue shaping global engagement. They foresee deeper integration of AI-assisted writing, translation, and multimedia support. By combining technology with human creativity, Chinese online literature is poised to expand cultural influence and reach more readers across the globe.
