The 8th Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo opened on Sunday. Participants from 97 countries attended exhibitions, performances, and cultural dialogues. The events showcased historical heritage and contemporary creativity.
Ukrainian dancer Romanovych Inna plays key roles in the dance drama “Ancient Sound of Dunhuang.” She spent six months refining her movements. The dance reflects the unique style of Dunhuang dance and is a central part of the Dunhuang cultural boom. The performance reinterprets figures from the Mogao Grottoes, a 1,600-year-old UNESCO World Heritage site.
Since its premiere in June 2023, “Ancient Sound of Dunhuang” has been performed over 2,400 times, drawing more than 860,000 spectators. Other shows, including “Flower Rains Along Silk Road” and “Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva,” appeal to international audiences and help sustain the city’s cultural revival.
Last year, four classic performing arts in Dunhuang drew over 1.14 million visitors. They staged more than 2,000 shows. These performances combine historical themes with modern creativity, immersing audiences in Silk Road history and further fueling the Dunhuang cultural boom.
To manage the growing influx of tourists, the Dunhuang Academy created a team of over 100 tour guides. The guides are fluent in seven languages. They explain the millennium-long legacy of cave carving and mural painting, supporting cultural tourism growth.
International participants, including Thailand as guest of honor, showcased cultural heritage at the expo. Prasop Riangngoen, permanent secretary of Thailand’s Ministry of Culture, highlighted historical links between Dunhuang murals and Thai temple art. This reflects the broader impact of the Dunhuang cultural boom.
Other international artists, such as Georgian dancer Vaja Bukia, adapted traditional movements from Dunhuang murals. They incorporated elements of their own cultures. Wang Qi, deputy director of marketing for the dance drama, said foreign cast members highlight cultural exchange and integration along the Silk Road.
Experts note the Dunhuang cultural boom helps preserve ancient heritage while promoting economic and tourism development. Initiatives such as the Dunhuang Book Center and Dunhuang Press inspire entrepreneurs to explore creative business opportunities rooted in culture.
