China’s Zheng Qinwen Set for Comeback at China Open

Date:

Chinese Olympic tennis champion Zheng Qinwen confirmed her Zheng Qinwen return during the China swing. Specifically, she will start with the China Open in Beijing. After elbow surgery, she is preparing to compete at home in a major tournament.

On Tuesday, Zheng said her recovery is progressing steadily. However, she admitted she is only 70 to 80 percent fit. Her baseline shots feel consistent, yet she is not yet in peak condition. Nevertheless, she emphasized that the Zheng Qinwen return gives her a valuable chance to restart the season.

Zheng underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow in July. Persistent pain had limited her performance, causing her to miss the US Open and other tournaments. Although she reached the French Open quarterfinal, early losses at other Grand Slams led her to undergo surgery. Therefore, she aims for a complete return to competition.

With the China Open approaching, Zheng is seeded seventh. Additionally, she receives a first-round bye and will begin in the second round. This, in turn, gives her extra days to train. Overall, the Zheng Qinwen return excites local fans eager to see her compete again at home.

The China Open, a WTA 1000 event, maintains a competitive field despite Aryna Sabalenka’s withdrawal. For instance, competitors include six-time Slam champion Iga Swiatek, defending champion Coco Gauff, and world No.4 Amanda Anisimova. Consequently, organizers expect strong ticket sales, boosted by the Zheng Qinwen return.

Reflecting on her absence, Zheng admitted the past two months were tough. She also emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks. “Tennis has taught me how to win and to lose,” she said, noting her motivation during the Zheng Qinwen return process.

Analysts view her comeback as a crucial test of resilience and physical readiness. In addition, they say her return to competition could inspire young Chinese athletes. Furthermore, it may strengthen China’s standing in global women’s tennis.

Looking ahead, Zheng hopes to rebuild momentum during the China swing. She will also prepare for the upcoming international season. Altogether, her return is a personal milestone and a symbolic moment for fans. Ultimately, the Zheng Qinwen return marks her official comeback on the court.
