Chinese Researchers Unlock Genetic Secrets of Wild Boar Migration

Chinese scientists have uncovered the wild boar genetic adaptations that helped these animals survive migration across Eurasia. This breakthrough reveals how wild boar genetic adaptations enabled them to adjust to changing climates over millions of years. The study provides important clues about large mammals’ responses to environmental shifts.

Researchers from the Agricultural Genomics Institute in Shenzhen conducted this study. They focused on Central Asian wild boars, which faced harsh conditions during migration. These wild boars moved from Southeast Asia’s tropical regions to colder, drier areas in Central Asia and Europe. Along the way, their wild boar genetic adaptations helped them survive cold temperatures and low ultraviolet light.

To understand these changes, the team analyzed 96 wild boar genomes from East Asia, Central Asia, and Europe. They combined new genetic data with existing high-quality samples. The analysis showed that Asian wild boars split from their Southeast Asian relatives about 3.6 million years ago. Over time, they formed distinct groups in southern China and Central Asia.

Central Asian wild boars developed special genetic traits suited for arid and cold environments. Specifically, they have two gene variants related to lipid metabolism. These genes help store energy efficiently during periods of food shortage. Additionally, scientists found a mutation connected to meat quality. This mutation may explain the boars’ strong physical build in harsh conditions.

Furthermore, these wild boar genetic adaptations help map the migration route of wild boars across Eurasia. They also offer valuable genetic resources for improving domestic pig breeding. By using these natural adaptations, breeders can develop stronger and healthier pigs.
