Cloud Gate Dance Theatre marked its 30th anniversary with a spectacular Lunar Halo outdoor performance on Saturday evening. The event drew around 35,000 spectators to the plaza in front of Taipei’s National Theater and Concert Hall. The outdoor setting added a fresh dimension to the company’s signature piece.
Choreographed by Cloud Gate’s artistic director Cheng Tsung-lung, Lunar Halo features music by Icelandic rock band Sigur Ros. Since its debut, the performance toured 22 cities across Taiwan. Over 314 shows, it captivated more than 2.7 million viewers.
Despite afternoon showers cooling the air, thousands of fans spread picnic mats, eagerly awaiting the evening’s show. The production featured an outdoor stage equipped with a massive LED screen. This created a visually striking experience for the large crowd.
Cheng expressed deep gratitude to everyone who helped bring the Lunar Halo outdoor performance to life. “Presenting this piece outdoors is extremely challenging,” he said. “I thank the dancers, crew, and volunteers for their dedication.”
He also shared his hope that the performance would remind people to appreciate the beauty of their own bodies. This message lies at the heart of the piece. While Lunar Halo has received acclaim since its original indoor debut, Saturday’s event marked the first time Cloud Gate performed it outside. The company overcame numerous obstacles, including suspending a huge LED light and switching off plaza lights except emergency exits, to maintain the show’s atmosphere.
The performance opened with dancers moving in perfect unison, resembling a giant centipede. Then, the dancers shifted into tribal rhythms, stomping in sync. Finally, the troupe invited the audience to join a joyous finale under the warm summer sky.
Liu Yi-ru, artistic director of the National Theater and Concert Hall, praised the good weather. She also extended her best wishes to those affected by recent flooding who continue to rebuild their lives. Overall, Cloud Gate’s 30th anniversary celebration showcased the power and creativity of the Lunar Halo outdoor performance, leaving a lasting impression on Taipei audiences.
