Corruption Probe Into Former First Lady Puts South Korea’s Political and Corporate Elites Under Scrutiny

Date:

The South Korea corruption probe into former first lady Kim Keon Hee has intensified as she faced a court detention warrant hearing. The special counsel, led by Min Joong-ki, seeks her arrest for alleged political fund violations, capital market breaches, and bribery. Investigators are focusing on stock manipulation, election influence, and bribery linked to shaman Jeon Seong-bae.

However, the South Korea corruption probe covers more than these charges. Authorities are pursuing 13 other major allegations before the investigation’s mandate ends. One claim is that Kim’s company, Covana Contents, received sponsorship from large corporations seeking ties with Yoon Suk Yeol. He served as Seoul’s top prosecutor before becoming president. The team reviewed old records to reassess these sponsorship deals, which may qualify as bribes.

Investigators have conducted multiple raids and questioned lawmakers, a religious leader, and corporate executives. They also target Kim’s aide, Kim Ye-seong, nicknamed her “butler.” He allegedly took 18.4 billion won from major firms, including Kakao Mobility, HS Hyosung, and Shinhan Bank. These funds went to his rental car company, IMS Mobility, formerly BeMyCar.

Kim Ye-seong reportedly sold his 4.6 billion won stake through a shell company despite the firm’s heavy debts. Investigators suspect the investors offered funds for influence due to his close relationship with Kim. BeMyCar also sponsored Covana Contents for years, raising further suspicion about their business ties.

The South Korea corruption probe also examines Kim’s possible role in a large drug smuggling operation. Authorities are looking into claims that customs officials helped Malaysian smugglers move methamphetamine through Incheon Airport. Police sources say senior officials pressured them to remove links to the Korea Customs Service from public reports.

Investigators are reviewing possible connections between Kim, senior police officer Cho Byeong-no, and businessman Lee Jong-ho. Lee is already a suspect in the stock manipulation case. The team suspects these ties may reveal influence-peddling and interference in state affairs.

The special counsel also investigates luxury gifts discovered during the probe. These include an expensive necklace and watch. Such items could provide more evidence of bribery or illegal benefits connected to Kim.
