Daegu Man Killed Mother-in-Law for Being Noisy as Brutal Family Violence Shocks South Korea

Date:

Brutal family violence has come to light in Daegu this week. A man in his twenties allegedly killed his mother-in-law because she was noisy. He also claimed she did not keep her belongings tidy. The suspect admitted to beating the victim for about two hours on March 18. The attack occurred at his residence in Jung-gu, Daegu using only his hands and feet. This brutal family violence has shocked the local community and drawn national attention.

The victim was a woman in her fifties. She had moved into her daughter’s home in September last year. She left her own husband due to marital discord before that move. Consequently, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law for about six months. No one filed any domestic violence reports during this period. The victim had been reported missing once after leaving home previously. Nevertheless, authorities had no warning signs of the coming tragedy.

The male suspect faces murder charges and abandoning the victim’s body. His wife, who is the victim’s own daughter, faces separate charges. She allegedly helped dispose of her mother’s body after the killing. On Thursday, both suspects attended separate arrest warrant hearings at a Daegu court. Police escorted the male suspect to the court for his hearing. The couple remains in custody as the investigation continues. This brutal family violence raises serious questions about hidden domestic abuse.

The case became public on Tuesday when police made a grim discovery. Officers found a body inside a suitcase floating near a bridge. The location was in Chilseong-dong along the Sincheon stream in eastern Daegu. Investigators determined that the couple placed the victim’s body into a suitcase. They then dumped the suitcase into the stream after her death. Multiple surveillance cameras captured the couple carrying a suitcase toward the water. Authorities believe the man had repeatedly abused the victim since February.

The National Forensic Service conducted a preliminary autopsy on the victim. The examination found multiple fractures throughout her entire body. Specifically, fractures appeared in her ribs and pelvis. The forensic service concluded that blunt force trauma caused her death. The severity of the injuries suggests a sustained and violent assault. Brutal family violence of this magnitude often leaves clear physical evidence.

Domestic violence experts note that living arrangements can increase risk. The victim lived with her son-in-law who had no biological ties to her. Such households may lack protective family bonds. Furthermore, the victim had recently left her husband and likely felt vulnerable. No official domestic violence reports had been filed before this incident. However, the repeated abuse since February indicates a pattern of escalating behavior.

The court will decide whether to issue arrest warrants for both suspects. Prosecutors will likely pursue severe charges given the nature of the crime. The case has prompted discussions about improving domestic violence detection. Neighbors and family members need better ways to report suspicious activity. Local authorities may review how they handle missing person reports. Future prevention efforts must focus on hidden abuse within households. This brutal family violence serves as a tragic reminder of that urgent need.
