Dave Roberts Not Worried About Ohtani’s Postseason Slump

Date:

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says he is not worried about Shohei Ohtani’s quiet postseason at the plate. Despite a slump in batting, Roberts argues Ohtani still contributes in critical ways. This stance matters as Ohtani prepares to pitch later in the series. Ohtani has produced just 4 hits in 34 at-bats so far, batting .147 in postseason play. He also drew three walks and hit two home runs. During the regular season, he hit .282 with 55 home runs and 102 RBIs.

In Game 2 against the Milwaukee Brewers, Ohtani sparked offense with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Roberts said Ohtani contributes beyond batting average by drawing walks and creating momentum with strong at-bats.

Roberts acknowledged that Ohtani has shown frustration. But he said he welcomed that edge. “He’s obviously a very talented player,” Roberts added. “We’re counting on him. There is still a lot of baseball left.” Ohtani returned to mound duty this season after elbow surgery sidelined his pitching in 2024. Roberts mentioned there is no fixed pitch limit for Ohtani in upcoming starts; his workload depends on how well he throws. He is expected to start Game 4 in Los Angeles.

Some analysts believe that Ohtani’s pitching appearances may affect his hitting. Roberts previously noted that the physical stress of pitching can blunt his plate performance. In Game 1 of the Division Series, Ohtani struck out four times after pitching earlier—Roberts suggested the dual role may take a toll.

Still, Roberts remained upbeat. He said he thinks Ohtani is in a good spot mentally and physically. He emphasized that Ohtani’s value derives not just from hits, but from drawing walks, influencing pitch counts, and creating scoring opportunities for teammates. Others in the sport have praised Roberts’ measured handling of Ohtani’s dual role. The balance between maximizing output and protecting health remains delicate. With Ohtani, fatigue or injury concerns can complicate usage.

Looking ahead, the Dodgers will monitor how Ohtani performs both as a hitter and pitcher. If he regains form with the bat while delivering on the mound, the team gains a major boost. If challenges persist, Roberts and staff may need to recalibrate his role. Roberts makes his message clear as he does not worry about Ohtani’s temporary slump. He sees a player still contributing in vital ways. As the postseason unfolds, that confidence may prove critical.
