China has introduced the Digital South initiative as a major component of its Global Development Initiative. Premier Li Qiang announced the plan during the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro.
Over the next five years, China will organize 200 training sessions on artificial intelligence and digital economy topics. These sessions are designed to benefit countries across the Global South. Premier Li made the announcement while addressing BRICS leaders in two plenary sessions held on Monday and Tuesday. He stressed the importance of international cooperation, digital development, and fair trade.
According to China’s Xinhua News Agency, Li said the global economy faces rising instability and complex trade challenges. He urged BRICS countries to safeguard multilateralism and reform global trade systems. Li emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration in emerging areas such as digital innovation, green energy, and intelligent technologies. He noted that these sectors hold great potential for shared economic growth.
The Digital South initiative, he explained, is meant to support developing countries in building strong digital capabilities. These programs aim to improve workforce readiness and technological inclusion. Li also highlighted artificial intelligence as a key driver of future progress. He encouraged Global South countries to adopt AI tools that improve industries and raise living standards.
In addition, Li invited international participants to the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which China will host this July. He described the event as a valuable platform for global dialogue on digital transformation. During the BRICS Summit, leaders discussed broader issues such as global health, climate resilience, and innovation. Delegates from member nations, partner countries, and global organizations participated in the sessions.
The Digital South initiative reinforces China’s ambition to lead in global digital development. Through this plan, China aims to empower Global South nations with tools for long-term technological growth.
