Drug Enforcement Department Strengthened as Independent Unit

Date:

The government expanded the Drug Enforcement Department into an independent unit. Consequently, authorities can fight drug crimes more effectively.

Currently, the Drug Enforcement Department works under the General Police Department. However, the government plans to make it fully independent. Therefore, lawmakers will amend narcotic control and criminal procedure laws.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet approved expanding the department within the existing police structure. Officials believe this change will improve coordination and strengthen enforcement.

The Cabinet also renamed some police units to clarify their functions. For example, the Investigative Department is now the “Criminal Investigation Department.” The Case Registration Department is now the “Crime and Offense Investigation Department.” As a result, responsibilities are clearer, and the public can better understand law enforcement roles.

Statistics show the urgency of reform. Specifically, authorities recorded 1,021 drug-related crimes between 2021 and mid-2025, involving 987 people. Moreover, the first half of this year registered 112 cases and investigated 97 suspects. This shows a 4.5 percent increase from last year.

Youth remain heavily affected. Notably, 51 percent of those involved were aged 13 to 25. Therefore, expanding the Drug Enforcement Department will improve prevention and enforcement efforts.

Officials say that strengthening the Drug Enforcement Department will protect communities. Additionally, the department will target trafficking, illegal distribution, and drug abuse. Consequently, citizens can expect faster and more coordinated responses.

Ultimately, the restructure boosts accountability and reduces youth involvement in drug crimes. Thus, the department will operate more flexibly and implement prevention programs nationwide.
