EU Japan Cooperation: Strengthening Economic Security Ties

Date:

European Commission Executive Vice President Stéphane Séjourné recently emphasized the importance of EU Japan cooperation in enhancing economic security. He highlighted the shared values between the European Union and Japan, which form a strong foundation for collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges.

Séjourné’s remarks came ahead of his inaugural visit to Japan since assuming office. He identified critical minerals, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and biotechnology as key sectors for potential collaboration. To explore these opportunities, Séjourné plans to be accompanied by EU business executives during his visit.

A significant aspect of the EU Japan cooperation is the establishment of a mechanism for joint procurement and stockpiling of strategic materials. Séjourné pointed to Japan’s efforts to reduce dependence on China for rare earth elements essential for battery production as a model for the EU to follow.

Reflecting on past energy policies, Séjourné acknowledged that the EU’s reliance on Russian gas was a mistake, leading to vulnerabilities. He emphasized the need for diversification and resilience in energy sources to strengthen economic security.

The upcoming discussions between EU and Japanese officials are expected to focus on creating frameworks that promote mutual interests in these critical areas. By aligning strategies and resources, both parties aim to bolster their positions in the global market and enhance their economic resilience.

In conclusion, the EU Japan cooperation represents a strategic partnership aimed at addressing pressing global issues. Through collaborative efforts in key sectors, both regions seek to fortify their economic security and pave the way for a more resilient future.
