Experts Warn: Limit Back Belt Use to Avoid Weakening Muscles

Date:

Taipei doctors are urging the public to limit back belt use to protect lower back muscles. Lin Wei-tin, a rehabilitation physician at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, explained that prolonged wearing can cause muscle atrophy. He emphasized that while back belts relieve pain and reduce spinal pressure, they are not meant for continuous use.

He added that back belts work best for people recovering from injuries. Individuals who lift heavy objects often or spend long hours sitting, standing, or engaging in intense activities also benefit. Moreover, the Food and Drug Administration recommends using belts moderately. Patients should combine back belt use with rest, proper rehabilitation exercises, and core-strengthening routines.

For those experiencing mild to moderate back pain, Lin advised wearing the belts only for short periods. Extended use may weaken essential core muscles, making the back more prone to injury over time. He noted that different lower back conditions—such as disc degeneration, joint problems, slipped discs, and muscle strains—require varying levels of support. Therefore, people should choose soft, rigid, or full-support belts according to medical guidance.

Similarly, Lin I-chun of Wuri Lin Shin Hospital highlighted proper posture as a crucial preventive measure. She recommended that people who sit for long periods stand and move every 30 minutes. Additionally, she explained that sitting increases pressure on the spine more than standing, raising the risk of spinal disc bulging.

Excessive exercise, heavy lifting, or strenuous labor can also lead to slipped discs. Taipei Veterans General Hospital noted that slipped discs are most common between ages 35 and 50. After 50, spinal discs stiffen, reducing the risk of herniation.

In conclusion, doctors repeatedly stressed responsible back belt use. Combined with posture awareness, regular movement, and targeted rehabilitation, belts can support recovery without causing long-term harm. Limiting belt usage protects muscles while still alleviating pain and strain effectively.
