Formosan Black Bear Habitat Protection Gains Ground in Taichung

Date:

Indigenous hunters in Taichung have taken a significant step toward protecting the Formosan black bear habitat. After recent evidence confirmed the area as a key home for the endangered bears, hunters voluntarily removed animal traps from their traditional hunting grounds. This effort highlights a growing awareness of the need for conservation.

Earlier this year, the Taoshan tribe’s patrol team captured clear footage of a large adult Formosan black bear using infrared cameras. They recorded this sighting during a routine patrol in March 2023. Notably, the previous year showed a sub-adult bear in the same location and season. These repeated sightings emphasize that the region serves as a stable habitat for the bears.

The Taoshan tribe, located in Taichung’s Heping District, consists of about 600 Atayal community members living in roughly 200 households. Nestled in mountainous terrain, the area offers a pristine ecosystem. It also features favorable geography, abundant waterways, and blooming peach trees. These natural advantages support the needs of the Formosan black bear and other wildlife.

Deputy Chief Chen Jung-wen of the Taoshan tribe has long observed signs of bear activity in the region. After confirming the recent sightings, he, along with other hunters, decided to remove their traps. Moreover, they began sharing detailed information about hunting areas. This cooperation aims to strengthen ongoing conservation efforts.

The Formosan black bear has remained endangered since 1989, under the Wildlife Conservation Act. Despite protection measures, the population has not recovered significantly. Various threats persist, including illegal hunting, habitat loss due to road construction, and disturbances from recreational activities. Protecting the habitat remains essential to reversing this decline.

Wildlife officials stress the importance of this region as a core habitat for the Formosan black bear. The bears’ seasonal movements and repeated appearances in this area prove its vital role in their survival. Thanks to the indigenous hunters’ voluntary actions, the Formosan black bear habitat protection is gaining momentum in Taichung.
