Global Economic Solidarity Guides G20 Summit Priorities

Date:

Chinese Premier Li Qiang called for global economic solidarity at the 20th G20 Summit in Johannesburg on Saturday. He emphasized that major economies must work together to sustain free trade and promote an open world economy.

Speaking at the first session focused on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, Li cited Chinese President Xi Jinping’s view that solidarity strengthens nations while division leads nowhere. He noted that G20 members have historically overcome major challenges by adhering to the spirit of cooperation and shared purpose.

Li warned that the global economy now faces mounting difficulties, including rising protectionism, unilateral trade measures, and escalating international confrontations. He argued that divergent interests and weak global cooperation frameworks are undermining international solidarity and slowing economic recovery.

Therefore, Li urged G20 members to confront these issues directly, pursue practical solutions, and restore collaborative engagement. He called for resolving disputes through equal consultation, seeking common ground while respecting differences, and addressing each nation’s reasonable concerns.

Furthermore, Li encouraged member states to strengthen multilateralism, modernize international institutions, and accelerate reforms at the World Bank, IMF, and World Trade Organization. He highlighted the importance of elevating the voice of developing countries to ensure fairer and more open trade systems globally.

Li also presented China’s initiatives to support industrialization in Africa and least developed countries. He noted China’s debt-reduction efforts, as well as a joint initiative with South Africa to modernize African economies. In addition, China plans to launch the Institute of Global Development to further international collaboration.

Leaders attending the session reinforced that the G20 represents the world’s major economies and emerging markets, noting the forum’s critical role in tackling economic challenges collectively. They stressed that global economic solidarity, cooperation, and reform remain central to ensuring balanced and inclusive growth.

The summit discussions emphasized safeguarding multilateral trading systems, narrowing development gaps, and fostering sustainable economic policies. Officials concluded that these measures are essential for long-term stability and shared prosperity.

Global economic solidarity, Li argued, is crucial for advancing international trade, promoting inclusive growth, and building a resilient world economy. The session underscored the need for continued cooperation to face rising instability and uncertainty.
