Germany Defends Peace and Stability in the Taiwan Strait

Date:

Germany has firmly spoken out in support of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This comes as tensions increase across the Indo-Pacific due to China’s growing military pressure.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul made the statement during his visit to Japan. He held a joint press conference with Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi following the first-ever Germany–Japan Strategic Dialogue.

Both ministers expressed deep concern about security threats in the region. Wadephul noted that Germany and Japan share strong security interests in the Taiwan Strait, South China Sea, and East China Sea. He warned that China’s actions risk upsetting regional peace and global order.

Wadephul stressed that the United Nations Charter clearly forbids the use of force. He said this rule must apply to all countries and regions, including the Indo-Pacific. Any attempt to change borders or status by force, he added, cannot be accepted.

Before his trip, Wadephul criticized China’s behavior near Taiwan. He said China threatens “the basic rules of global cooperation.” According to him, Germany will stand against these threats by working with partners who support international law. “We believe in an international order built on law and rules, not on threats or coercion,” he said. “We must act together to defend that order.”

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Wadephul’s remarks. In an official statement, it thanked Germany for showing support at a critical time. The ministry said Wadephul’s comments show that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait matter to the global community.

Taiwan also praised Japan’s continuing role in defending regional peace. The ministry promised to keep working with democratic nations to defend shared values. It stressed that unity and cooperation are vital in the face of rising threats.

This marks Wadephul’s first official visit to Asia since taking office. His strong statements send a clear message: Germany will not stay silent as China escalates tension in the region.

As tensions rise, Germany’s partnership with Japan and Taiwan gains new importance. Together, they aim to preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, which remains key to global security.
