APEC Summit Preparations Transform Gyeongju Into a Global Diplomatic Hub

Date:

Gyeongju is buzzing with activity as APEC summit preparations enter their final phase. The city, once the capital of the Silla Kingdom, now welcomes global leaders and visitors for South Korea’s key diplomatic gathering.

Security has intensified around the Hwabaek International Convention Center, the main venue of the summit. Police vehicles patrol the streets, and temporary traffic signs guide drivers around restricted areas. Technicians and volunteers complete final checks to ensure smooth operations during the two-day event.

Meanwhile, the city’s visual transformation is striking. Streets near the Bomun Tourist Complex display banners and sculptures featuring the official APEC logo. The design draws inspiration from smiling roof tiles of the Silla era, symbolizing cultural continuity and modern pride.

Restaurants near the venue are also preparing for international guests. Many now use AI-powered translation devices that support 37 languages. These tools help local staff communicate clearly with visitors, reducing language barriers and improving service quality.

Additionally, taxi drivers have joined the national effort. Veteran driver Park Sang-jin volunteers weekly to direct traffic near crowded tourist areas. He said he feels proud to help maintain safety and promote hospitality. The city has also installed translation systems in 1,000 taxis to assist communication between drivers and tourists.

Food options for the summit have expanded. The city launched a temporary halal restaurant, “Hi Asia,” operated by chef Gondal Mubashar from Busan. The restaurant serves Indian and Pakistani dishes and includes a small prayer room for Muslim visitors. Mubashar said he hopes to offer guests comfort and a sense of belonging through food.

Moreover, over 250 volunteers now support APEC summit preparations across key venues. They assist with interpretation, logistics, and event coordination. Among them is Son Ye-ji, a Korean student from Tokyo, who joined the volunteer team to contribute to her country’s global image.

According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the event may create 23,000 jobs and generate 7.4 trillion won in economic impact.

As a result, Gyeongju’s blend of ancient culture and modern innovation stands out. Through dedication and teamwork, APEC summit preparations have transformed the city into a symbol of South Korea’s international engagement and civic unity.
