Gyeongju APEC Summit: Korea Prepares for Major International Event

Date:

South Korea is finalizing preparations for the upcoming Gyeongju APEC Summit, signaling a major diplomatic and cultural milestone. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok visited Gyeongju Thursday, marking his eighth inspection this year, and furthermore emphasized the government’s readiness for the international event.

During his tour, Kim visited key facilities, including Gimhae International Airport, exhibition halls, and the media center, ensuring that the infrastructure could handle the summit’s demands. In addition, he highlighted Gyeongju’s cultural and historical significance, stating that the city offers a unique backdrop to present Korea’s heritage to global leaders.

“Gyeongju has an abundance of historical content that reflects Korea’s identity,” Kim said. Moreover, he added, “This summit provides an opportunity to deliver a message of integration, peace, and forward-looking innovation.” He also called for an “unrivaled K-APEC” experience, with flawless attention to security, accommodations, logistics, meals, and cultural programs.

Similarly, North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheol-woo echoed the Prime Minister’s focus on cultural promotion. He noted that the city’s thousand-year history makes it an ideal location to showcase Korea beyond Seoul. Furthermore, Lee pointed out the anticipated U.S.–China meeting, stressing its global importance while reiterating that the summit offers an opportunity to elevate Gyeongju as a tourism destination.

In terms of logistics, Gyeongju has prepared for up to 7,700 overnight guests per day, with 14,000 rooms available. Moreover, all accommodations have undergone inspections to ensure quality and security. Officials also confirmed that local residents will not face significant disruptions despite heightened security measures.

The HICO APEC Leaders’ Conference Hall, remodeled at a cost of 15.3 billion won, is nearly ready. Currently, final adjustments, including carpet installation, furniture placement, and lighting calibration, are underway. Additionally, VIP lounges and summit chambers are under strict security control.

Adjacent to the summit venue, the International Media Center will host approximately 3,000 journalists. Facilities include a 450-seat briefing hall, three additional briefing rooms, and private interview booths. Consequently, officials anticipate comprehensive media coverage and efficient dissemination of summit proceedings.

Finally, officials said the Gyeongju APEC Summit will not only advance Korea’s diplomatic agenda but also strengthen regional tourism, cultural promotion, and infrastructure development.
