Han Kuo-yu’s 2028 Run: Han Kuo-yu’s 2028 Run Gains Momentum

Date:

Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu’s 2028 run gains momentum as political tensions rise in Taiwan. Recently, rumors surfaced suggesting Han might consider running for president in 2028. This possibility depends heavily on the outcome of the current recall campaign led by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). According to sources close to Han, if the DPP succeeds in removing him from his legislative post, Han’s popularity could actually increase. This boost might set the stage for a strong presidential bid. Moreover, this development could energize his supporters and deepen his grassroots base.

At the same time, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen reportedly aims to become the Kuomintang (KMT) chair. This move could complicate Han’s path toward the party’s nomination. Nevertheless, Lu’s ambitions do not entirely rule out Han’s potential candidacy. Both politicians could face off in the party’s primary election, creating an intense internal competition. A KMT insider noted that Han holds the highest-ranking position within the KMT coalition. Therefore, his removal could provoke considerable political pushback during the 2028 election. The insider further emphasized Han’s close ties to influential party leaders and his strong grassroots support. These factors could make him a formidable contender against Lu in the race for the nomination.

Meanwhile, the DPP would need to flip six Legislative Yuan seats to gain a majority. Additionally, the party must win 24 seats to successfully recall Han, according to Tai Sounds. If the DPP gains control, it could change internal rules to facilitate Han’s removal. KMT Legislator Hsieh Lung-chieh accused DPP caucus convener Ker Chien-ming of eyeing the speaker position, heightening political tensions. However, political commentator Grace Woo urged Han to focus on his current duties. She stressed the importance of addressing domestic divisions and external threats rather than preparing for a presidential run.

Woo’s comments remind observers of the challenges Taiwan faces beyond party politics. In conclusion, Han Kuo-yu’s 2028 run gains momentum amid unfolding political battles. The recall campaign may ironically strengthen his candidacy, despite internal party rivalries and shifting legislative control. As Taiwan approaches its next election cycle, all eyes remain on Han’s future moves.
