Heavy Rainfall Advisory Issued for Northern and Eastern Taiwan

Date:

Taiwan’s northern and eastern regions face a heavy rainfall advisory as meteorologist Wu De-rong highlights the risk of significant rain in the coming days. This heavy rainfall advisory comes as a result of strong northeasterly monsoon winds combined with the nearby Tropical Storm Fengshen. Authorities warn that the heavy rainfall advisory signals potential hazards including flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Starting Sunday and lasting through Wednesday, heavy rain will likely affect northern mountainous zones and low-lying districts. Eastern counties such as Hualien and Taitung also face a high flood risk, particularly in places already impacted by landslide-formed barrier lakes. The persistent rain stems from moisture funneled by winds and storm periphery effects.

Along with the rainfall, temperatures in northern Taiwan will steadily drop. Daytime highs could decrease by around three degrees Celsius, with nighttime lows falling to near 20 degrees Celsius starting Monday. This temperature change adds another layer of concern for residents preparing for the unsettled weather.

Meteorological models project that Tropical Storm Fengshen will weaken between Thursday and Saturday. The storm is expected to move northwest toward the South China Sea and then shift southwest near Hainan Island. Despite the weakening storm, the northeasterly winds will continue to bring moisture to Taiwan’s windward side, maintaining the risk of continuous rain.

Taipei City’s Disaster Management Office urged residents to avoid mountain and waterway activities during the extended holiday weekend. The office highlighted the threat of torrential rain in Yangmingshan, Neihu, and Nangang mountainous areas. These warnings come amid concerns over rapidly rising river levels, which may force upstream reservoirs to release water.

Officials also cautioned that riverside evacuation gates might close or restrict access at short notice. The Taipei Water Resources Department advised residents to stay clear of riverside parks, especially in low-lying areas near the Tamsui River, including Taipei Bridge and Bailing Left and Right Bank Riverside Park.

Drivers parking in these flood-prone areas can register their vehicles with the city’s Parking Management Office. This allows them to receive timely flood-preparedness alerts regarding dike parking lot closures. Residents and commuters are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow official guidance to ensure safety during this period of heavy rainfall advisory.

In conclusion, this heavy rainfall advisory stresses the importance of preparation and caution. The combined impact of monsoon winds and Tropical Storm Fengshen’s influence could disrupt daily life and pose safety risks. Authorities will continue monitoring conditions closely and provide updates as the situation develops.
