Authorities have issued warnings about Liwu River Danger after water levels surged in Hualien County. The erosion of a barrier lake dam upstream intensified risks for downstream communities.
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency’s Hualien branch reported that the overflow channel near Swallow Grotto in Taroko National Park has widened. Consequently, the increased water flow further eroded the landslide dam. Officials warned that this could cause additional damage or even collapse the dam, further raising water levels downstream.
In response, the Hualien County Government advised the public to avoid the downstream riverbed and urged residents in Minle Village, Sioulin Township, to evacuate immediately. Authorities emphasized the seriousness of the Liwu River Danger and requested full public cooperation.
Emergency crews have been working to excavate the riverbed and lower the dam. However, a contractor explained that the widening of the overflow channel tripled water flow, washing away the backfill and complicating mitigation efforts.
