Japan Transocean Air (JTA), a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL), will launch its first international route between Okinawa and Taoyuan, Taiwan, in February 2026. The Okinawa Taiwan route marks a major expansion of the airline’s predominantly domestic network.
The new service will start on February 3, 2026, offering one round-trip flight per day. Tickets will be available for sale beginning December 3, 2025. JTA plans to operate the route using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with economy and premium economy seating.
Through this Okinawa Taiwan route, passengers traveling from Taiwan can also access JAL Group’s broader domestic and international network, centered in Okinawa. This provides convenient hub-based connections to additional destinations across Japan.
The Okinawa Taiwan route comes amid rising tourism demand between the two countries. Between January and July 2025, 3.87 million Taiwanese visited Japan, making it the top overseas destination for Taiwanese travelers. Airlines are responding by expanding service options to meet growing passenger demand.
In addition to JTA’s plans, Tigerair Taiwan announced last week that it will introduce three new routes to Japan. The Kaohsiung-Kumamoto and Tainan-Kumamoto routes will begin on December 23, 2025, and the Tainan-Okinawa route will start December 25, 2025. These new flights further strengthen air connectivity between Japan and Taiwan.
Industry analysts highlight that JTA’s new Okinawa Taiwan route will provide both economic and strategic benefits. It enhances Okinawa’s position as a travel hub and offers increased flexibility for travelers seeking connections within Japan.
Furthermore, the route is expected to stimulate tourism, strengthen cultural exchange, and provide economic gains for Okinawa’s hospitality sector. Officials view these developments as an opportunity to promote regional growth while accommodating rising international travel demand.
JTA’s move also reflects broader trends in Asia-Pacific aviation, as carriers increasingly open international routes to capitalize on recovery in tourism and business travel. With these expansions, travelers between Japan and Taiwan will enjoy more options and convenient schedules.
The Okinawa Taiwan route will officially commence in February 2026, marking a significant step in JTA’s international expansion strategy.
