Japan-US Tariff Talks Continue as Akazawa Prepares for Washington Visit

Date:

Japan-US tariff talks continue with urgency as negotiators aim to finalize a deal before President Trump’s August 1 tariff deadline. Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, announced Saturday that he will visit Washington next week for more ministerial-level discussions.

The 25% tariff threat from the United States has intensified pressure on both sides. Japan hopes to reach a fair agreement that avoids damage to its economy while maintaining strategic ties with Washington. “I intend to seek an agreement that benefits both sides while protecting Japan’s national interest,” Akazawa stated clearly in Osaka.

Akazawa’s upcoming trip signals Japan’s serious commitment to resolving the trade issue. Although he met U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier in the day, they did not discuss tariffs directly. Their meeting took place at the U.S. National Day celebration during World Expo 2025 in Osaka. Akazawa hosted the visiting U.S. delegation for the event.

Despite the lack of direct negotiation during their meeting, Japan-US tariff talks continue behind the scenes. The government remains hopeful that diplomatic efforts will help avoid tariffs on Japanese goods. Tokyo sees the Washington visit as a chance to restart more focused and technical talks at the ministerial level.

Time, however, is running out. The Trump administration’s deadline is less than two weeks away. Failure to strike a deal could result in serious costs for Japanese exporters, especially in the automotive and manufacturing sectors. These industries form a critical part of Japan’s economy and global trade strategy.

Although Akazawa avoided specifics, his remarks suggest that Japan plans to push for flexibility while maintaining its red lines. Previous statements from both sides hinted at a possible compromise, though key sticking points remain.

Japan has emphasized that any agreement must align with broader economic goals and domestic support. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to push for improved market access, particularly for American agricultural and automotive exports.

As the deadline nears, Japan-US tariff talks continue with rising urgency and strategic complexity. The outcome may shape the next chapter of economic relations between the two allies.
