Kaohsiung Hotels Face Backlash for Price Gouging Twice Concert Weekend

Date:

Hotels in Kaohsiung are under scrutiny for price gouging Twice concert fans during the upcoming performances. The Korean girl group Twice confirmed an extra show on November 23, following their original concert on November 22. This announcement caused ticket sales to skyrocket and all tickets sold out within minutes. Consequently, hotel bookings near the Kaohsiung National Stadium surged dramatically.

Many fans rushed to book accommodations for the weekend but encountered shocking price increases. Several hotels advertised rates that were ten times higher than usual. For example, a room that typically costs NT$1,134 (around US$37) suddenly jumped to NT$11,000 (about US$350) on November 22. This significant spike sparked outrage among Twice fans and concerned residents alike.

In response, the Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau took immediate action. Director Kao Min-lin stated officials are conducting on-site inspections at multiple hotels. The bureau aims to identify and penalize businesses engaging in price gouging Twice concert attendees. According to local regulations, hotels found guilty could face fines ranging from NT$10,000 to NT$50,000.

Moreover, the tourism bureau plans to enforce fines cumulatively. This means each overcharged customer will result in an additional penalty. For instance, one hotel has already been fined for charging an executive suite’s rate for a basic quad room. Kao also mentioned that the bureau is considering tightening laws to raise maximum fines for future cases of price gouging Twice concert fans.

Overall, this situation highlights the challenges that arise when popular events cause sudden demand spikes. While fans eagerly prepare to attend Twice’s historic performances in Taiwan, authorities work to ensure fair pricing. The Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau’s swift response signals a firm stance against exploitation. Meanwhile, fans continue to seek affordable accommodations for what promises to be an unforgettable weekend.

Price gouging Twice concert attendees remains a serious issue. However, ongoing inspections and possible law amendments could deter such practices. As the concert dates approach, all eyes stay on Kaohsiung’s hotel industry and the city’s efforts to protect consumers.
