Kharkhorin City Reconstruction Kicks Off

Date:

The Kharkhorin City Reconstruction officially began on June 15, 2025, marked by a ceremonial raising of the Mongolian State Flag at “The Great Khaans’ Garden.” This event follows a decree issued by President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, aiming to revive Kharkhorin in the historic Orkhon Valley. Back in 2022, to honor the 860th anniversary of Great Chinggis Khaan’s birth, President Khurelsukh called for rebuilding Kharkhorin. Since then, the project has gathered momentum and now enters an active construction phase. The president emphasized the importance of restoring the city’s ancient image and spirit based on historical documents and archaeological evidence.

Furthermore, he stressed the need to develop critical infrastructure such as roads, railways, airports, energy sources, waste management, and water treatment. The reconstruction plan also prioritizes green urban spaces and agricultural clusters. To achieve these goals, the government is encouraging collaboration among public agencies, private businesses, and citizens.

Green spaces will cover 50 percent of the new city’s area. Specifically, over 1 million trees and shrubs will be planted across 1,500 hectares. Recently, more than 800 workers from 40 organizations planted 550,000 trees. Additionally, the Great Khaans’ Garden alone saw 11,000 new trees added by both public and private groups. Infrastructure improvements include 13,000 square meters of parking and sidewalks, along with lighting and irrigation systems.

Kharkhorin City Reconstruction aims to house around 500,000 residents and create nearly 285,000 jobs. The city will support regional growth with advanced social, health, and cultural services. Moreover, it will include diplomatic missions, government offices, and modern industries. The city plan designates 30 percent of the area for buildings and 20 percent for roads.

Importantly, Kharkhorin City Reconstruction seeks to reduce urban problems such as congestion and pollution. The project will promote healthy living by providing green spaces, clean water, and safe environments. The Mongolian State Great Khural passed a law to support the city’s planning and development. Authorities also formed the Governor’s Office, City Council, and Council of Scholars to oversee the work.

Currently, efforts focus on building the Great Khaans’ Garden, an Information and Promotion Complex, and restoring the Khugshin Orkhon River, Kheltgii White Lake, and ancient ruins. Furthermore, the government secured 189,000 hectares of land in Uvurkhangai and Arkhangai for this state project. In conclusion, the Kharkhorin City Reconstruction project marks a historic step toward reviving Mongolia’s heritage while fostering modern growth and sustainability.
