Ko Wen-je Case Sparks Taipei Protest for Justice

Date:

Supporters of the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) gathered in Taipei to protest the detention of Ko Wen-je. Furthermore, the protest highlighted concerns over the Ko Wen-je case. Many citizens joined to demand fairness in Taiwan’s legal system.

The former Taipei mayor and presidential candidate has stayed in detention amid corruption allegations. Authorities accuse him of wrongdoing during his tenure as mayor. However, protesters argue he is unfairly targeted. They claim the charges are politically motivated and aim to weaken opposition parties.

TPP Chair Huang Kuo-chang led the march toward the Presidential Office. Nevertheless, police blocked the streets, citing violations of the Assembly and Parade Act. As a result, demonstrators began chanting to abolish the law. They demanded democratic freedoms and government transparency. The crowd remained peaceful but vocal.

The event began near Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. Party supporters included Ko’s wife and mother. Huang emphasized the rally marked the first anniversary of prosecutors searching an opposition party headquarters in Taiwan. In addition, he said such actions should not happen in a democracy.

During speeches, Huang called for judicial reforms. He urged stronger confidentiality in investigations and more judicial independence. Protesters highlighted systemic bias against opposition leaders. Moreover, they encouraged citizens to stay vigilant and protect democratic principles.

The Ko Wen-je case has drawn wide attention. Prosecutors seek a lengthy prison sentence. Allegations claim Ko accepted bribes from a developer to expand the Core Pacific City project. Consequently, critics argue the punishment is excessive and politically motivated. They insist the judicial system must act fairly.

Supporters said the protest aimed to restore justice and protect democracy. Meanwhile, many chanted slogans demanding fair trials and transparency. The TPP stressed that political persecution must end. Organizers also urged public oversight of government actions.

Overall, the rally showed strong public concern over the Ko Wen-je case. Therefore, protesters vowed to continue advocating for legal reforms. Ultimately, the demonstration reinforced calls for a transparent and independent judiciary in Taiwan.
