Komeito Coalition Gains Public Approval

Date:

Komeito coalition decisions have drawn significant public support, according to a recent Yomiuri Shimbun survey. The results indicate broad approval of Komeito ending its alliance with the Liberal Democratic Party.

The survey, conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday, showed that 77 percent of respondents thought Komeito leaving the LDP coalition was appropriate. Among LDP supporters, 75 percent shared this view. The findings suggest that voters across party lines increasingly favor the new political alignment.

Supporters of the Japan Innovation Party were particularly approving, with about 90 percent agreeing with Komeito’s move. Most Komeito supporters and other party backers also expressed positive opinions regarding the decision.

The survey additionally examined reactions to the new LDP-JIP coalition. About 70 percent of LDP supporters approved of the agreement to form a coalition government, while 22 percent disapproved. Overall, 57 percent of all respondents approved, with 31 percent disapproving. More than 90 percent of JIP supporters expressed approval, though many Komeito voters voiced opposition.

When asked whether JIP members should have held ministerial posts, 58 percent of all respondents opposed the idea. This included 58 percent of LDP supporters and roughly 80 percent of JIP supporters, indicating a preference for the JIP to support the government from outside the Cabinet.

Despite these approvals, the new coalition still holds only a minority of seats in both houses of the Diet. Voters were asked which parties the LDP and JIP should ideally collaborate with. Thirty percent chose the Democratic Party for the People, 17 percent selected Sanseito, 15 percent picked the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, and 9 percent chose Komeito. Eighteen percent did not select any party.

The survey also touched on legislative priorities. About 80 percent of JIP supporters said bills to reduce lower house seats by 10 percent should pass quickly, while 55 percent of LDP supporters agreed and 36 percent disagreed.

Analysts suggest that Komeito coalition choices may influence voter sentiment, but approval ratings for the LDP and JIP have not significantly changed. Lawmakers face ongoing debate over reforms and party alignments.

Komeito coalition decisions continue to reshape Japan’s political landscape, reflecting both public sentiment and strategic realignments within the Diet.
