Lai’s Unity Tour in Hualien Faces Backlash Over Recall Ties

Date:

President Lai Ching-te may resume Lai’s unity addresses in Hualien. Reportedly, a closed-door session is being planned. Initially, the speeches aimed to promote national unity. However, the political backlash has intensified in recent weeks.

Earlier this year, Lai announced a series of ten unity speeches. Each one would highlight Taiwan’s past, present, and future. Furthermore, he framed the project as a national healing effort. Yet, critics from opposition parties remain unconvinced.

According to several lawmakers, the speeches align with recall efforts. These efforts target Kuomintang (KMT) legislators, especially caucus whip Fu Kun-chi. Since Fu represents Hualien, Lai’s visit raises additional concerns.

Within the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), some voices also express doubts. While many support the unity message, others question the timing. One insider said the events seem more political than unifying. As a result, tensions have grown within the party itself.

DPP Spokesperson Justin Wu addressed the controversy on Wednesday. On one hand, he said the events are not officially linked to any recall campaigns. On the other hand, he admitted the two efforts do overlap.

Still, Wu emphasized Lai’s commitment to solving real problems. For example, he pointed to national security and economic challenges. He also noted that such priorities leave little room for political games. Nevertheless, criticism from rivals continues to mount.

Lai’s aides argue the speeches promote transparency. Moreover, they say these talks give the public a voice. By contrast, opposition groups claim the president is using state resources for political gains.

Meanwhile, political science professor Chen Shih-min warned of unintended consequences. He believes Lai’s unity addresses have provided ammunition to the opposition. In his view, the KMT may use this moment to rally support and inflame anti-DPP anger.

Despite those concerns, the unity events may move forward. Supporters insist that open discussion helps build democracy. However, critics argue that the speeches distract from core national issues.

As tensions rise, public reaction will be key. Voters may either embrace or reject Lai’s unity addresses depending on what comes next. Ultimately, the success or failure of the initiative may shape the country’s political future.
